The Internet of Things and edge computing have a wide array of applications that can improve the customer experience, and digital signage vendors are beginning to tap into its potential. During a webinar entitled “Improving customer experience with IoT devices and edge computing,” panelists discussed a few ways these devices can help deliver a better experience.
The webinar, which was hosted on Digital Signage Today and sponsored by Intel, was moderated by Bradley Cooper, editor of Digital Signage Today and featured panelists Chris Devlin, president of Omnivex Corp. and Cheol Kim, general manager of the global retail, gaming and entertainment business unit, vertical market organization, Internet of Things Group, Intel Corp.
During the webinar, the panelists discussed a variety of topics including:
- How IoT devices can help customers navigate spaces.
- How digital signage can use IoT devices.
- How to incorporate IoT devices.
- How organizations have used IoT.
- How to analyze the true business value of IoT connected communications.
Customer expectations are constantly evolving and changing as is the demand for more seamless experiences. The Internet of Things can help meet these demands by gathering information and crafting personalized experiences, Devlin said during the presentation.
COVID-19 has in turn boosted the demand for IoT, as airports, retailers, schools, public transit and the entertainment industry all need to develop smart spaces, Kim said.
In particular, Kim said that digital signage is the fastest growing segment in the IoT market, with other devices such as kiosks also seeing growth.
Other types of smart space IoT solutions include keyless entry, fever scanning, facemask detection, social distance monitoring, interactive displays, disinfecting robots and more.
“The focus is on how the various technologies work together to make a smart space safer and productive for users,” Kim said.
Devlin mentioned a number of ways IoT devices can help deliver these safer environments. For example, they could notify travelers of wait times on displays or provide updates on restroom capacity statuses as well as directions to other bathrooms. It could also alert facilities staff if certain areas get overcrowded.
Devlin said that business will need to “quickly adopt sensors to optimize locations and improve traffic flow.”
“Your only limitation is your imagination,” Devlin said.
