Walked inside a government agency, fast food facility, or transportation hub lately? If you have, it’s possible you got what you came for without ever speaking to anyone. That’s because there’s a new way to peruse menus, services, and inventories. It’s not quite instant gratification, but it’s pretty close. So go ahead, place your favorite value burger order, and discover the digital kiosk and how that process was so easy while you wait.

Dynamic digital signage is transforming how industries engage consumers. However, when one thinks of digital signage, it’s usually rectangular and vibrant video screens displaying information to everyone within viewing distance. Some industries, however, are deploying them in a more personalized way: the interactive kiosk.

A digital kiosk at a health care facility allows patients to check-in, provide required patient information, and display a map to the doctor’s office and other services. Using a touchscreen, a resident can apply for permits, complete forms, or accomplish various other tasks via a digital kiosk at government offices.

Wait! Do you mean there is digital signage I can walk up to and touch?

That’s right. Self-service kiosks are interactive tablets or touchscreen computers that allow customers to access information, services or even place food orders without speaking to a person. By implementing self-service kiosks, a business can scale operations more efficiently while also reducing costs.

How They Work

Kiosks consist of a touchscreen computer or a tablet protected by a plastic or fiberglass enclosure to prevent damage and tampering. Tablets are increasingly popular because they’re lightweight and self-contained. No keyboard, mouse, or monitor is needed. Certain functionality, however, may require peripherals like a card reader or printer.

The purpose of kiosk software is twofold: to provide the specific application required to perform a service task and lock the device to that particular program or application. Kiosk software is generally designed and implemented the same way an app on any smartphone is.

A qualified AV integrator can recommend or even provide a complete solution designed for any business or organization. However, keep in mind any smart tablet or computer will serve your purposes. A company must decide what platform – iOS, Windows, Android – they’re most comfortable with and whether they’ll use a ‘one size fits all’ software application or have one custom-designed for their needs.
